Throwback Thursday: 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend New Balance Girls Night Out Event

In honor of #ThrowbackThursday, the ladies of Run All The Races are looking back on the 2015 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend and a very unique special event – the New Balance Girls Night Out.

Launched in 2014, New Balance Girls’ Night Out (GNO) is designed to offer women the opportunity to redefine what a “night out” with their girlfriends means to them and share their experiences using #NBGNO on Twitter and Instagram.

Music. Fitness. Squad Goals. This is endorphin-fueled frenzy at its finest.  A heart-pumping, butt-kicking workout event with expert fitness hosts, nutritious eats, and super swag.  So grab your girls, grab your gear, and get ready for a different kind of night on the town.

It was fate that we just happened to be on our phones at exactly the right time to see a quick post on the Disney Parks Blog about how to sign up for the event.  We managed to snag spots and were excited to get a chance to try something different this race weekend.

Upon confirmation that we were accepted to the event, we were informed that the event was to take place at Disney’s Grand California Hotel & Spa Convention Center.  Oh, and by the way, wear athletic clothes, as we were going to have to earn our pampering and snacks.

My precious...

My precious…

The focus of the #NBGNO event was – of course – the runDisney New Balance Tinker Bell shoes, which were released specifically at the Tinker  Bell Half Marathon race weekend. The table decorations included the shoes and twinkling fairy lights – so cute.  We’d been to the Race Expo on the first day and managed to snag these beauties ourselves (and Kimberly and Jessica even sported them to the event!).

Please don’t let me fall over in front of all these people…pretty please.

As we checked into the event we were ushered into the ballroom and discovered that we were going to get our yoga on!  We grabbed mats, spread out around the floor, and mixed and mingled with our fellow participants.

Then it was time for stretching and posing.  I’ll be the first to admit that while I love yoga, I’m definitely NOT the most limber person in the world (I blame RunningAllTheRaces…and getting older…).  A live DJ provided some great tunes (and covered up all our giggling at ourselves and our weak yoga game).

This part we ARE good at...

This part we ARE good at…CHEERS!

Rebecca’s daughter getting a little massage (and that’s water in her glass – we promise!).

The mellowing out continued after the yoga with a champagne toast in New Balance glasses, wine, snacks and mini spa treatments!  After you finished your champagne, there were calligraphy artists there that personalized your glass with your name and pixie dust accents before you took it home as a souvenir.  I still have mine – it sits on a shelf right under all my runDisney medals.

We had a great time at this event and have been hoping New Balance would bring it back at either Tinker Bell or Princess Half Marathon Weekends – running shoes crossed it does make another appearance!

#MondayMemories: A Look Back at Our Very First “Official” Races Together – 2014 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend

#MondayMemories: A Look Back at Our Very First “Official” Races Together – 2014 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend

2014 Neverland 5K

2014 Neverland 5K

In a good way, it seems like I’ve always known Delightfully Dopey Kimberly…  Truth be told, we ran our very first races together just about 3 years ago at the 2014 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend.

As the 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend approaches – I’m getting a bit sentimental 😉

Over the last 3 years, we’ve had people think we’re sisters (or somehow otherwise related), childhood friends, college roommates, and/or neighbors – the only constant we get is “WHAT?!?!” when we tell people we’ve only know each other a few years, live across the country from each other (about as far away as you can get), and met via Facebook when we were looking for someone to share a hotel room with for Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend such a short time ago.

Initially, there were four of us that were going to share a room at the Disneyland Hotel and, for reasons I don’t remember – by the time we

had to finalize our reservations and pay – only Kimberly and I remained.  There’s a part of me that thinks those two ladies see how the crazy has grown over the years and think that they got away just in time!

Between finalizing the hotel reservations and getting ready to run the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend races, Kimberly got her breast cancer diagnosis.  In true Kimberly style, before she announced it on Facebook, I got a FB Message letting me know what was happening and including Kimberly’s promise that “I’ll be at Tinker Bell, I’m not backing out…you still have a roommate and DO NOT give my bed away!”

As we still had never met and figured out we were both running the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend races, we decided that it would be a good idea to meet in Lake Buena Vista, FL before Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend.  We played it off that it would be smart to meet and figure out what we actually looked liked before I had to pick Kimberly up at LAX the following weekend.  We came clean later and admitted that we really wanted to meet to make sure neither of us were crazy internet people before ending up sleeping in the same room together.  Turns out we ARE crazy internet people, but we suffer from the same crazy – so that’s okay in our book!

#WoodenIndianSelfie

We ended up running the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon together, but that was a last minute decision,

2015 Neverland 5K (with PhotoBomb Becca and her daughters and Tiny Tiki Jessica)

2015 Neverland 5K (with PhotoBomb Becca and her daughters and Tiny Tiki Jessica)

and I still consider the 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend as the real start of our RunAllTheRaces journey.  There was no definitive moment when it clicked, but by the end of the half marathon that weekend, we had made plans for the rest of the 2014 runDisney race schedule (and even figured out how to run some local New England races together).

2015 Tinker Bell 10K

2015 Tinker Bell 10K

As you get older, finding new friends that “just fit’ gets harder and harder and the best part has been that we’ve been able to expand our #BRF group to include PhotoBomb Becca, Tiny Tiki Jessica, and California Kiley (and our dear friends Merle – who still resists the costumes, no matter how hard we try – and Sterlyn – who’s game for “costume light”…).  And our extended families now spend vacations and holidays together.  I’m not saying you should sign up to sleep in a dark hotel room with everyone you meet on Facebook, but sometimes you just get lucky 😉

The rest, as they say, is history (and a BUNCH of really good running costumes).

Thanks for following along –

Throwback Thursday: Evolution of a Costume [or We Just Can’t Manage to Run Away from the #TinkTroopers]

Throwback Thursday: Evolution of a Costume [or We Just Can’t Manage to Run Away from the #TinkTroopers]

When people tell us their favorite of our many runDisney race costumes, #TinkTroopers comes up most often.  Ironically, this costume was a complete afterthought…a last minute idea that we were not completely sure would work.

10155531_10152845666326032_8639477094383021953_n11008478_10152845665831032_8952319874425556287_nIdeas for the Inaugural Disneyland Star Wars 5K (X-Wing and TIE Fighter) and 10K (C3-P0 and R2-D2) came quickly but we just could not come up with an idea for the Half Marathon that we didn’t think everyone else would be wearing.

We tossed around what seemed like a million ideas – none of which struck a chord with us – so we left for the race weekend with NO costumes for the half marathon.

As we sat in out hotel room that first night, we pulled up Amazon Prime and started searching “Star Wars”.

Part of our struggle was that this weekend had been the Tinker Bell Half Marathon weekend for the past several years and we were initially prepared with a list of potential costume for that race weekend.

10685323_10152845666536032_7605749322795512057_nAnd that’s when it hit us.

Why not pay homage to Tinker Bell and her race weekend that got the boot to a later date?.. WWTBD?  What would Tinker Bell Do if she showed up for the Star Wars Half Marathon?

So we went back to Amazon Prime and a few clicks later everything we needed for #TinkTroopers was on it’s way 2-day delivery to the hotel.  We picked up the package at the front desk the night before the half marathon – fingers crossed it would work.

Race morning we got dressed and couldn’t stop laughing.  WE thought it was funny and we were prepared to be okay if we were the only ones who got it.  Turns out EVERYONE got it.  Just goes to show you how impactful a simple idea can be.

#TinkTroopers have shown up in a number of places:

The Tinker Bell/Star Wars mash-up worked so well, we had numerous people ask us to wear them again the next year.  We didn’t want to repeat the same costumes, so we compromised by continuing the mash-up theme.  Year #2 was a Tinker Bell/Princess Leia mash-up – #LeiaBell.  It was fun wearing #AllTheBuns.

We’ll be back with another Tinker Bell/Star Wars mash-up for this weekend’s Star Wars Light Side Half Marathon.

Any guesses as to what we’ve come up with?..
