Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Liquid Run

Hi everyone California Kiley here with another Summer Fun Run. As summer is now in full swing in a lot of area road racing kind of shuts down during the hotter weather months but I was invited out to a race that is all about summer running. Held in Newport Beach California The Liquid Run is a race like no other race out there. This is a floating obstacle race that measures 1/4 mile. I expected it to be small and pretty easy being only a 1/4 of a mile. Having run so many full marathons this year I felt I could take on the Liquid Run with no problems but I will tell you this was a great workout and I was sore the next day!! The best part it was a blast I think this was my favorite fun run to date!

19578140_10155471518868252_1641603966_n

Here’s the details on the race:

  • It run 9-5 so if getting up early sounds awful not a problem you can run it late. Or make it a all day event your choice if you upgrade your registration to VIP you can run the course as many times as you like. If you want to make it an all day beach day it’s the best day to do it as people are running the course all day and it’s actually really fun to watch!
  • I give this a great “Mommy and Me” stamp as it’s a great race to have kids at. Every paid adult gets a kids free play wristband which is a really fun float area.
  • There is a competitive heat at 9am so if you want to run fast then 9am is your race. This is a great time to watch as a lot of the serious racers are really trying to kill the course next year I’m going to totally be there to at least witness it!
    The Liquid Run swag!

    The Liquid Run swag!

  • No running experience needed
  • Swag is awesome! Instead of a T-shirt you get a medal at the end, a pair of sunglasses, sunscreen, a string bag, and a waterproof phone carrying case which we used during the race!
  • Staff was amazing!! Literally the nicest most helpful group ever! Volunteers who I was informed are mostly all returns from the past year because of how much fun they had volunteering! That’s pretty cool in itself.

This race had really only had one small con and that is it can get bottlenecked if you have a struggling group in front of you. Really this isn’t the worst thing in the world as I’m not really in any great hurry since it’s not timed and really there isn’t a huge hurry but know it will most likely take you about 2 hours to run the whole course since you will wait to conquer some of the bigger obstacles.

Only reasons not to do this race:

  • If you are deathly afraid of the water the floating obstacles sit in deeper water but you are provided with a life vest you will still end up in the water at least in the start and the end. You don’t need to be Michael Phelps though to do this race so even if your swimming level is low you are good to go.
  • You are no fun at all and think spending a day at a beautiful California beach is a bad idea!

Talking with the race directors the main mission of the race is to have fun and realize that this isn’t about cut off times or age group awards it’s really about a good time. I can honestly say this race has found a way to really take summer running to the next level! As they try to expand to different areas and more races a year I hope to be back for more of their races because it was truly the most fun I’ve had. Thank you to Sarah for coming along and helping me with pictures, video and interviews! A huge thank you to The Liquid Run staff, volunteers and runners for having us out at your super cool event! The race director said it best “we just want everyone to have a happy day!” Well Run All the Races had the happiest day thank you again!

Race Report: 2017 The Color Run – Boston

Race Report: 2017 The Color Run – Boston

I’m happy to report that I had a blast at The Color Run Boston!

Check out our video above to see all the fun we had…

I was excited that the winner of our bib giveaway was a friend of mine – Sue Hayes – and she graciously offered to add her Pro and Con list to this post – and I have to agree with everything she has to say (there’s a reason we’re friends after all…#GreatMindsThinkAlike).

Pros-

  • Sponsors provided great swag of measurable value
    • Gail’s Note: It was a great tie-in to partner with Stop’nShop (a local New England grocery chain) to give away laundry detergent as swag as you left the race – GENIUS!)
  • Shirt was made of soft cotton and cutely designed
  • Bib pickup was easy and quick
  • Text messaging from race was efficient form of communication
    • Gail’s Note: This was especially important, as the truck carrying the color for the race had issues and there was a delay in the race start
  • Photo ops before event were colorful and unique
  • DJ before, after and during the event was lively and supported the “party atmosphere”
  • Course was just challenging enough and came very close to the stadium, making it interesting for those who had not been there before
    • Gail’s Note: Gillette Stadium is home to the New England Patriots
  • Merchandise was nicely designed and reasonably priced
  • Ample restrooms before, after and throughout the course
  • Cute medal
  • Appropriate and fun event for all ages (As long as the participant can walk 3.1 miles)
    • Gail’s Note: Saw LOTS of people of all ages – lots of families running the event together
  • Easy free parking
  • Great proximity to Patriot Place for post event celebration
  • Cute mile markers to measure your progress

Cons-

  • There could have been a little more clarity about the staggered start
    • Worked out fine for us, because we knew to edge up into line but, I imagine, some runners did not start for quite a while
  • No real post race food provided by color run (only water) and snacks given out by sponsors
  • Water on the course was kind of a log jam area and hard to get
    • Gail’s Note: We ended up bypassing all but the last water stop for this reason; at the first stop, they were out of water in cups and were frantically trying to fill cups and/or participant’s own water bottles; would have also been helpful if water was available on both sides of the course
  • While the color areas were fun, in order to get “color” on you, you had to be near a volunteer/ employee throwing it at you
    • There could have been a couple more individuals at each station to move folks though quicker and get them the full color run experience
  • Not appropriate experience for someone looking for a real “run”’
    • You have to put on another hat, so to say, and realize this is really just for fun and it is fun!
      • This is not a real con, just a heads up to runners
  • No real need for the foam – It kind of made me scared that I was going to wipe out
    • Gail’s Note: It was right at the end of the course and up a bit of a hill; we slowed WAY down because it was slippery

NOTE: I HAVE to add that my unicorn onesie came clean – even after hanging out in my hotel room for the week and making a treck across county before washing.  This means I HAVE to sign up for another race to get my rainbow unicorn back on!

Now, for the shoes I was testing for a running shoe company and had to mail back right after the race…that company did ask me to wear them for ALL my runs during the testing period 😉

Thanks for following along –

California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series: The Fat Boy 5K

California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series: The Fat Boy 5K

Hi everyone, California Kiley here!

Welcome to the second post of my new series: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series.

Several weeks ago, I signed up for another “new to me” race in Long Beach, CA The Fat Boy 5k.

This 5k is all about food and started in Baton Rouge, LA. The name and structure of the race didn’t first draw me in but, after seeing pictures of the New Orleans race on Instagram – and my running friend Jean talking me into joining her I reached out to find out more about this run.  Turns out, it’s all about food and fun.

So this weekend I will be heading to Shoreline Aquatic Park and running this 5k.  Want to join me?  Sign up here.

Stay tuned for more 5k fun runs still to come!

California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series: The Great Donut Run

California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series: The Great Donut Run

Hi everyone, California Kiley here!

Welcome to the first post of my new series: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series.

This summer I’m super excited to highlight a series of “fun runs.”  “Fun runs” average 5K in length, are generally themed, and many are untimed.  These races are perfect for everyone from hardcore marathoner to the those just starting out.  5Ks are great as summer races as they get you out there moving – without leaving you out in the hot sun forever.

First “fun run” on my list is The Great Donut Run held in Irvine, CA – where eating donuts in the middle of the race actually happens at the donut stop!

After weeks of hardcore races it was so awesome to have a great time at a stress free untimed 5k. Since the sponsor was Krispy Kreme Doughnuts my ideas for costumes were centered around their color schemes. This was one of the largest group costumes we have done in a while but it came together really well.

The box hat was my brain child that did stress me out because of the weight and getting it to sit right on your head. I manged to construct 3 of the hats. Lucky for me, my fellow running friend Jean helped make the other 3 since I was out of supplies – and time – to make more. Aprons were ordered and the logos were off the many donut boxes that were given to us. The mini donuts were another one of my brain children and were handmade over the course of 3 days.

Huge thank you to the Krispy Kreme Doughnut stores in Orange, Long Beach and Mission Viejo, CA that supplied us with all the boxes and hats used to create this costume!

This summer I’ve really focused my attention on a bunch of fun and different races in order to find a new love of running – as well as to share that this sport really is for anyone that wants to try it!

Stay tuned for more 5k fun runs still to come!

#FridayFunday: A Race of a Different Color…[The Color Run]

#FridayFunday: A Race of a Different Color…[The Color Run]

It all started a few months ago when California Kiley reached out to the rest of the RunAllTheRaces gals and asked if we would be interested in running The Color Run. I’m all for running all the races but – as a known neat freak – I’m not gonna lie…the thought of getting all those colors on my running gear (and myself) makes me more than a little bit nervous.

It just so happens that I will be in Boston, MA for work exactly when The Color Run hits Boston.  Sometimes you need to take one for the team (and the blog).  So just what have I gotten myself into?

What is The Color Run?

The Color Run

The Color Run, also know as the Happiest 5K on the Planet, is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness, and individuality.  Now the largest running series in the world, The Color Run has been experienced by over 6 million runners worldwide in 35+ countries.  And that number will soon be 6 million and 1…

How does The Color Run Work?

Less about your 10-minute-mile and more about having the time of your life, The Color Run is a five-kilometer, un-timed event in which thousands of participants, or “Color Runners”, are doused from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer. With only two rules, the idea is easy to follow:

  • Wear white at the starting line
  • Finish plastered in color

This year’s events includes dreamy colored foam and new colors (PURPLE!) in the classic powder Color Zones. Along the course, participants can paint their aspirations on the Dream Wall, snap whimsical photos with giant unicorns, and get the ultimate color inspiration as they party with friends at the Finish Festival amidst vibrant bursts of color throws.

Want to register for The Color Run?

Unicorn Army

You can join me for The Color Run Boston on 11 June 2017.  If not, I’ll miss you, but there’s additional races across the country currently scheduled through November 2017.

Your individual or Team (4+ runners) registration includes:

  • Race entry
  • Limited-edition Dream Tour race shirt
  • Embroidered headband
  • Temporary tattoo
  • One-of-a-kind UNICORN Finisher’s Medal
  • Color packet

EVEN BETTER: Use Coupon Code DREAM5 to save $5.00 off your registration.

Wanna dress like a unicorn?

So now I all have to do is get my unicorn on in time to look fabulous for the race. Lucky for me (and you) there’s a lot of unicorn going around these days.

Here’s some of my favorite potential unicorn-themed race costumes that still ensure all the awesome colors will be highlighted:

Stay tuned to see what I’ve selected…

How to get your color on (or off, if you’re me)

Screen Shot 2017-05-31 at 3.26.41 PM

There’s good news for everyone here – no matter whether you want to savor the color on your next run or remember it fondly – and just in your race photos 😉

To keep your color:

  • Pre-Race:
    • Dress the part and wear white. The more white you wear at the beginning, the more color you’ll see on your clothes at the end! So deck yourself out in bright white and be ready to get colorful!
      • Though the color will eventually wash out of just about everything, you may not want to bring your Peg Perego Stroller… Or your $500 running shoes… Or your white suede pants.
  • Post-Race:
    • After the run, spray your colorful clothing with vinegar until soaking wet. Allow them to dry in the sun, then tumble dry in the dryer to set in the color and make a cool souvenir. Voila! The perfect souvenir to remind you of all the memories.

To clean your color:

  • Pre-Race:
    • Oiling your hair well on race morning will make it easier to wash out the color later. Coconut oil or olive oil work best. A good leave in conditioner will do the trick as well. This is a particularly useful tip for runners with light colored or highlighted hair.
    • We suggest some form of Color Run eyewear. Some people wear sunglasses or swim goggles. Have some fun with it and try to avoid getting a lot of powder in your eyes.
    • Some runners wear a thick scarf or bandana to cover their hair. Others use the bandana to cover their mouth as they run through the color zones or to help wash off after. However you choose to use it, a bandana or scarf is pretty useful at The Color Run.
  • Post-Race:
    • Dust off as much dry powder as you can before you apply any water. Take advantage of our “Color Blower Station” at the post race festival for some help. Most of the color will evaporate like magical fairy dust.
    • Cleaning your hair: Dust any loose powder out of your hair. Rinse out the oil/conditioner you wisely applied before the race with cold water. Most of the color should come right out. Now wash your hair as you normally would. It is not uncommon for hints of some of the color, pink and purple particularly, to stick around for a few washes. Wear it like a badge of honor. Or wear a hat.
    • The color is probably not coming all the way out of your white cotton shirt. You should be proud of that. But just about everything else should clean up fine. Remove all excess powder before adding water. Wash your Color Run gear separately, with COLD water. Oxiclean, or a similar product, will work wonders on your running equipment. Every so often you may look down a see a little trace of pink on your shoe and smile. It’ll remind you that we love you. Eventually, it’ll all be gone.

I’ll be back after the race to share my (colorful) photos and race experience.

Thanks for following along –

#MondayMemories: A Look Back at Our Very First “Official” Races Together – 2014 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend

#MondayMemories: A Look Back at Our Very First “Official” Races Together – 2014 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend

2014 Neverland 5K

2014 Neverland 5K

In a good way, it seems like I’ve always known Delightfully Dopey Kimberly…  Truth be told, we ran our very first races together just about 3 years ago at the 2014 runDisney Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend.

As the 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend approaches – I’m getting a bit sentimental 😉

Over the last 3 years, we’ve had people think we’re sisters (or somehow otherwise related), childhood friends, college roommates, and/or neighbors – the only constant we get is “WHAT?!?!” when we tell people we’ve only know each other a few years, live across the country from each other (about as far away as you can get), and met via Facebook when we were looking for someone to share a hotel room with for Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend such a short time ago.

Initially, there were four of us that were going to share a room at the Disneyland Hotel and, for reasons I don’t remember – by the time we

2014 Tinker Bell 10K

2014 Tinker Bell 10K

had to finalize our reservations and pay – only Kimberly and I remained.  There’s a part of me that thinks those two ladies see how the crazy has grown over the years and think that they got away just in time!

Between finalizing the hotel reservations and getting ready to run the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend races, Kimberly got her breast cancer diagnosis.  In true Kimberly style, before she announced it on Facebook, I got a FB Message letting me know what was happening and including Kimberly’s promise that “I’ll be at Tinker Bell, I’m not backing out…you still have a roommate and DO NOT give my bed away!”

2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon

2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon

As we still had never met and figured out we were both running the 2013 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend races, we decided that it would be a good idea to meet in Lake Buena Vista, FL before Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend.  We played it off that it would be smart to meet and figure out what we actually looked liked before I had to pick Kimberly up at LAX the following weekend.  We came clean later and admitted that we really wanted to meet to make sure neither of us were crazy internet people before ending up sleeping in the same room together.  Turns out we ARE crazy internet people, but we suffer from the same crazy – so that’s okay in our book!

#WoodenIndianSelfie

#WoodenIndianSelfie

We ended up running the 2014 Walt Disney World Marathon together, but that was a last minute decision,

2015 Neverland 5K (with PhotoBomb Becca and her daughters and Tiny Tiki Jessica)

2015 Neverland 5K (with PhotoBomb Becca and her daughters and Tiny Tiki Jessica)

and I still consider the 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend as the real start of our RunAllTheRaces journey.  There was no definitive moment when it clicked, but by the end of the half marathon that weekend, we had made plans for the rest of the 2014 runDisney race schedule (and even figured out how to run some local New England races together).

2015 Tinker Bell 10K

2015 Tinker Bell 10K

As you get older, finding new friends that “just fit’ gets harder and harder and the best part has been that we’ve been able to expand our #BRF group to include PhotoBomb Becca, Tiny Tiki Jessica, and California Kiley (and our dear friends Merle – who still resists the costumes, no matter how hard we try – and Sterlyn – who’s game for “costume light”…).  And our extended families now spend vacations and holidays together.  I’m not saying you should sign up to sleep in a dark hotel room with everyone you meet on Facebook, but sometimes you just get lucky 😉

The rest, as they say, is history (and a BUNCH of really good running costumes).

Thanks for following along –
