Hmmmm – maybe next time it’s 3,000 degrees outside we go with a dark blue super suit…

We were super excited for this year’s Disneyland 5K, in part because of the super costumes we put together with our favorite costume  collaborator Katie from DG Sports Group.

What was less than super was the heat and humidity…spandex unitards and sweat make for some funny (and embarrassing)  race photos.

On this episode we chat about the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend race expo and the Disneyland 5K, which included a brand new Disney Pixar theme.

Race Report: California Kiley Runs San Francisco

Race Report: California Kiley Runs San Francisco

Hi everyone! California Kiley here with another California race! Even though I’ve been exploring world of 5k fun runs basically all summer long I had a race was a little longer. The 40th San Francisco Marathon. Even though I ran the full back in 2015 and said it was a one and done race and could move on from the SF series they handed us a new challenge.

20641493_10155592774783252_239609886_o

The Golden Gate Bridge

20642217_10155592774853252_1527115233_oFirst let me break down this huge marathon for you, they have a 5k, 2 different course half marathons, the full marathon and the ultra marathon. All run on Sunday and all take you on a journey of San Francisco. The first time I ran this race way back in 2010 to participate in their final “California Dreaming Series,” I fell in love with running in San Francisco. It was just awesome and that one race would send me back up there a few times a year to run different SF races over the years. I took a 3 year break from the SF Marathon series till 2013 when I traveled up there for the race to start their new “half it all challenge.” Run the first half and the second half in back to back years and get your super cool 2nd medal. During that time they were partnered with my favorite 20662746_10155592774473252_568736562_ofull marathon the LA Marathon and had challenge if you ran the LA Marathon and one of the SF halfs or fulls in the same year and you guessed it you get another medal. (Do you see a trend here??) Once you finish the “Half it all Challenge” then if you run the full you are now part of their “52 Club” and give you a sweatshirt on your 3rd year. So once I finished those 3 years I thought we were done and I let my “legacy fall in 2016. What we didn’t know was if we had run anything in 2016 this year we would have been gifted the 5 year legacy water bottle! This year they offered their 40-40 challenge which was if you ran the full marathon or half marathon in the last 2 years you qualified for their 40-40 challenge. This is a onetime never going to happen again (well until the 50th anniversary lol) kind of race. My friend that I ironically met while running their first half during our “half in all challenge” start said we have to go! So the idea of running the full on its anniversary of the full marathon made tons of sense….ON PAPER!

This year I have run more full marathons they I ever have in one year. After Big Sur I felt I could handle anything so I was talked into yet another full marathon. The race is iconic because you get to run over the Golden Gate Bridge on the first half, full marathon and ultra. It’s always a cool experience and I have run over the bridge now 3 times since starting the SF Marathon. I’m sure many others have run it more but I’m a socal girl so even though a lot of people think “oh it’s in California,” it’s not overly close so it’s still travel race for me even if it’s short travel.

20630258_10155592774933252_112308536_o

ALL the BLING!

This year the weather was great but know if you are set to run the full marathon here it’s two different types of weather. Cold on the bridge and warm thru the finish. This race will take you thru Fisherman’s Wharf, into the Presidio, across the bridge and around the scenic lookout and back over the bridge. Leaving the bridge you are around mile 9 and heading for the hills of San Fran. The finish of the first half ends in Golden Gate Park. The second half starts nearby with a later start time. It sends you thru the whole park and I refer to those as the “dark miles” it’s quiet and a ton less people so you are just alone with your “marathon thoughts.” For me this year they were dangerous thoughts as I literally didn’t want to keep running from 16 to 17. There were many miles of extreme tiredness where just walking was a challenge. Leaving the park you head into “The Haight” which is known as an old hippie town and in the 1960s it was a site to see as my parents always told me. After the haight you journey thru more of the streets of SF heading back to the Embarcadero which is your finish. Mile 25 wraps around the San Francisco Giants stadium and almost every year I’ve run the race it’s been a game day so there is a ton of crowd support. If you love huge races that run thru amazing cities this is a great race. I strongly recommend that you make a trip up and run one of their races. Marathon has a cut off of 6 hours and while it’s not as hard of a cut as Big Sur you will get pushed to the sidewalk and not finish under the actually finish line. Even coming in later most of the finish line stuff was shutting down so keep that in mind when you are training.

Hope everyone’s summer running is going well stay tuned for more 5k fun runs coming soon!!

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – U.S. Vets 5K

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – U.S. Vets 5K

Hi everyone California Kiley here with another 5k race as a part of my Summer Fun Run Series! This was an inaugural 5k held in Mission Viejo California at Saddleback College. The race named the Vets 5k seemed simple enough so I agreed to add it in to my series. Parking was so easy and super close to the start and finish line. Walking up the race was an easy check in and organized. One of the things I noticed was the race shirt you received with your bib had a special place that you were able to write in who were running in honor of which I thought was such a great touch to making the race shirt more than just a one you would throw in the race shirt pile.

19402338_10155436771558252_712056253_oThe course was through the college grounds which I enjoyed a lot however it did have some inclines in the course which was the buzz among runners afterwards. After running the Big Sur Marathon I have a whole new view on hills and inclines and I actually enjoyed the challenge. This was amazing on a race level seeing so many military vets out supporting the race and the cause.

The kids race was really something special as it was the kids “ruck pack” race. Where the kids get to carry the military backpacks around some of the track. Standing around seeing some of the parents actually putting on the packs and trying them out made me think this could be a subdivision next year as I seen as least 2 guys in full gear and packs running the 5k.

For a first time race this was run incredible well and I would defiantly love to be back next year. Thanks so much Vets 5k for having me out!

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Fat Boy 5K

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Fat Boy 5K

Hi everyone California Kiley here with another 5k fun run as part of our California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series!

This time I ran another “new to me” race in Long Beach California called “Fat Boy 5k.” This 5k is all about food, which was started in Baton Rouge LA. The name and structure of the race didn’t first draw me in but after seeing pictures of the New Orleans race on instagram and my friend Jean from Donut Run talking me into joining her I reached out to find out more about this run it’s all about food and fun. With a 8am start I headed to the Shoreline near the Long Beach Aquarium. Many other races follow this course here in Long Beach so I wasn’t expecting a life changing course for this 5k.

19389858_10155432181583252_1936007014_n

It’s been a long time since I actually have run a 5k, truthfully I don’t actually run very many since most are group settings and all about the costumes they usually take me a while to finish. Since I had a work event right after I knew I couldn’t stay long so I chose to see where my running levels are and actually run. I’m definitely not where I used to be but 30 minutes is fine by me since it got me to the awesome snack tables quicker!!

19402511_10155432181648252_478640383_o

Kelsey won her age group!

This race is set up different than any other race I’ve ever run. Instead of age group awards they use weight categories. That weird face you just made as you read that I had the same one, however it was actually really cool. If you ever see age group awards it’s basically the same 10 people that basically win the age group and sometimes the overall awards. But with this one being fast in your weight group is how this works so I even felt as though I might have a chance. (Spoiler I didn’t win lol) Seeing so many people that aren’t your typical folks trying for group awards was probably one of the coolest parts. The best part was one of our friends actually did win her weight group!

Right there I changed my thoughts on this race as it gives more than just the same usually awards suspects the secondary awards.

19369282_10155432181628252_723559801_o

Food wise we were given gourmet donuts from a local donut shop called Sweet Retreat in Long Beach along with cookies, chips, nuts, and the basics bananas, oranges, a bunch of coffee drinks and flavored waters. We were also got gift cards for Chik Fila and Lucille’s BBQ. Since this race is all about food they really did give us a lot of variety. Even though I had mixed feelings on this 5k it was great and I look forward to coming back out to future races!

More summer fun runs coming your way!

Race Report: 2017 The Color Run – Boston

Race Report: 2017 The Color Run – Boston

I’m happy to report that I had a blast at The Color Run Boston!

Check out our video above to see all the fun we had…

I was excited that the winner of our bib giveaway was a friend of mine – Sue Hayes – and she graciously offered to add her Pro and Con list to this post – and I have to agree with everything she has to say (there’s a reason we’re friends after all…#GreatMindsThinkAlike).

Pros-

  • Sponsors provided great swag of measurable value
    • Gail’s Note: It was a great tie-in to partner with Stop’nShop (a local New England grocery chain) to give away laundry detergent as swag as you left the race – GENIUS!)
  • Shirt was made of soft cotton and cutely designed
  • Bib pickup was easy and quick
  • Text messaging from race was efficient form of communication
    • Gail’s Note: This was especially important, as the truck carrying the color for the race had issues and there was a delay in the race start
  • Photo ops before event were colorful and unique
  • DJ before, after and during the event was lively and supported the “party atmosphere”
  • Course was just challenging enough and came very close to the stadium, making it interesting for those who had not been there before
    • Gail’s Note: Gillette Stadium is home to the New England Patriots
  • Merchandise was nicely designed and reasonably priced
  • Ample restrooms before, after and throughout the course
  • Cute medal
  • Appropriate and fun event for all ages (As long as the participant can walk 3.1 miles)
    • Gail’s Note: Saw LOTS of people of all ages – lots of families running the event together
  • Easy free parking
  • Great proximity to Patriot Place for post event celebration
  • Cute mile markers to measure your progress

Cons-

  • There could have been a little more clarity about the staggered start
    • Worked out fine for us, because we knew to edge up into line but, I imagine, some runners did not start for quite a while
  • No real post race food provided by color run (only water) and snacks given out by sponsors
  • Water on the course was kind of a log jam area and hard to get
    • Gail’s Note: We ended up bypassing all but the last water stop for this reason; at the first stop, they were out of water in cups and were frantically trying to fill cups and/or participant’s own water bottles; would have also been helpful if water was available on both sides of the course
  • While the color areas were fun, in order to get “color” on you, you had to be near a volunteer/ employee throwing it at you
    • There could have been a couple more individuals at each station to move folks though quicker and get them the full color run experience
  • Not appropriate experience for someone looking for a real “run”’
    • You have to put on another hat, so to say, and realize this is really just for fun and it is fun!
      • This is not a real con, just a heads up to runners
  • No real need for the foam – It kind of made me scared that I was going to wipe out
    • Gail’s Note: It was right at the end of the course and up a bit of a hill; we slowed WAY down because it was slippery

NOTE: I HAVE to add that my unicorn onesie came clean – even after hanging out in my hotel room for the week and making a treck across county before washing.  This means I HAVE to sign up for another race to get my rainbow unicorn back on!

Now, for the shoes I was testing for a running shoe company and had to mail back right after the race…that company did ask me to wear them for ALL my runs during the testing period 😉

Thanks for following along –

Perfectly Goofy Gail
