Hmmmm – maybe next time it’s 3,000 degrees outside we go with a dark blue super suit…

We were super excited for this year’s Disneyland 5K, in part because of the super costumes we put together with our favorite costume  collaborator Katie from DG Sports Group.

What was less than super was the heat and humidity…spandex unitards and sweat make for some funny (and embarrassing)  race photos.

On this episode we chat about the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend race expo and the Disneyland 5K, which included a brand new Disney Pixar theme.

Thanks for following along –

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Orange County Fair 5K

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Orange County Fair 5K

Hi everyone California Kiley here with another great summer 5k fun run! I’ve really been enjoying going back to all these super fun short races this year and am planning on continuing the Fun Run Series after the summer season has ended.

20733029_10155608673663252_970311623_n

On to my latest fun run held right here in Southern California at the Orange County Fair! Yup you heard that right you get to run thru the fair and in true fun run fashion they add a lot of fun elements. Such as getting to play fair games in the middle of your race and win a prize! In past years you could ride the giant banana slide but for reasons we haven’t figured out it wasn’t open this year even though it was listed on the website and emails. Another what the OC Fair 5k calls “Detours to Fun” you are welcome to get your photo on the Pacific Amphitheater stage before heading back to the finish line. This race is put on by the OC Marathon group who always do a great job and give you a lot for your money. Every racer with a bib receives:20771864_10155608673718252_1519804528_o

  • T-shirt
  • Finishers Medal
  • Ticket to the Fair
  • Free entry into the fair for the day of the race with your bib!

I’ve run this race now 7 years in a row now and we always do some fair fun which is always a fun day with running family! Our costume has stuck with the color orange in honor of the “Orange” County Fair, this year we added a orange slice dress made by CowCow which was super comfortable to run in.

“Orange” you glad for all the summer fun runs???

Till next time!

California Kiley

Race Report: California Kiley Runs San Francisco

Race Report: California Kiley Runs San Francisco

Hi everyone! California Kiley here with another California race! Even though I’ve been exploring world of 5k fun runs basically all summer long I had a race was a little longer. The 40th San Francisco Marathon. Even though I ran the full back in 2015 and said it was a one and done race and could move on from the SF series they handed us a new challenge.

20641493_10155592774783252_239609886_o

The Golden Gate Bridge

20642217_10155592774853252_1527115233_oFirst let me break down this huge marathon for you, they have a 5k, 2 different course half marathons, the full marathon and the ultra marathon. All run on Sunday and all take you on a journey of San Francisco. The first time I ran this race way back in 2010 to participate in their final “California Dreaming Series,” I fell in love with running in San Francisco. It was just awesome and that one race would send me back up there a few times a year to run different SF races over the years. I took a 3 year break from the SF Marathon series till 2013 when I traveled up there for the race to start their new “half it all challenge.” Run the first half and the second half in back to back years and get your super cool 2nd medal. During that time they were partnered with my favorite 20662746_10155592774473252_568736562_ofull marathon the LA Marathon and had challenge if you ran the LA Marathon and one of the SF halfs or fulls in the same year and you guessed it you get another medal. (Do you see a trend here??) Once you finish the “Half it all Challenge” then if you run the full you are now part of their “52 Club” and give you a sweatshirt on your 3rd year. So once I finished those 3 years I thought we were done and I let my “legacy fall in 2016. What we didn’t know was if we had run anything in 2016 this year we would have been gifted the 5 year legacy water bottle! This year they offered their 40-40 challenge which was if you ran the full marathon or half marathon in the last 2 years you qualified for their 40-40 challenge. This is a onetime never going to happen again (well until the 50th anniversary lol) kind of race. My friend that I ironically met while running their first half during our “half in all challenge” start said we have to go! So the idea of running the full on its anniversary of the full marathon made tons of sense….ON PAPER!

This year I have run more full marathons they I ever have in one year. After Big Sur I felt I could handle anything so I was talked into yet another full marathon. The race is iconic because you get to run over the Golden Gate Bridge on the first half, full marathon and ultra. It’s always a cool experience and I have run over the bridge now 3 times since starting the SF Marathon. I’m sure many others have run it more but I’m a socal girl so even though a lot of people think “oh it’s in California,” it’s not overly close so it’s still travel race for me even if it’s short travel.

20630258_10155592774933252_112308536_o

ALL the BLING!

This year the weather was great but know if you are set to run the full marathon here it’s two different types of weather. Cold on the bridge and warm thru the finish. This race will take you thru Fisherman’s Wharf, into the Presidio, across the bridge and around the scenic lookout and back over the bridge. Leaving the bridge you are around mile 9 and heading for the hills of San Fran. The finish of the first half ends in Golden Gate Park. The second half starts nearby with a later start time. It sends you thru the whole park and I refer to those as the “dark miles” it’s quiet and a ton less people so you are just alone with your “marathon thoughts.” For me this year they were dangerous thoughts as I literally didn’t want to keep running from 16 to 17. There were many miles of extreme tiredness where just walking was a challenge. Leaving the park you head into “The Haight” which is known as an old hippie town and in the 1960s it was a site to see as my parents always told me. After the haight you journey thru more of the streets of SF heading back to the Embarcadero which is your finish. Mile 25 wraps around the San Francisco Giants stadium and almost every year I’ve run the race it’s been a game day so there is a ton of crowd support. If you love huge races that run thru amazing cities this is a great race. I strongly recommend that you make a trip up and run one of their races. Marathon has a cut off of 6 hours and while it’s not as hard of a cut as Big Sur you will get pushed to the sidewalk and not finish under the actually finish line. Even coming in later most of the finish line stuff was shutting down so keep that in mind when you are training.

Hope everyone’s summer running is going well stay tuned for more 5k fun runs coming soon!!

California Kiley

Race Report: 2017 Red Beard Rally (or All I Want for My Birthday is an Ego Boost…)

Race Report: 2017 Red Beard Rally (or All I Want for My Birthday is an Ego Boost…)

So…I turned 45 the other day.

It’s not 50 – but it’s creeping dangerously close – and while I don’t really feel 45, it always hurts just a little when you have to check the next age block up on a form or race registration.  As Samantha in “Sex in the City” said for Carrie’s birthday one episode, “Honey, welcome to my box.”  In my case, that’s the 45 – 49 box.

Except it's 45 - 54 for me...

Except it’s 45 – 54 for me…

I’d had 2 pretty good races the last few weeks in my 40 – 44 box.  A 3rd place in my age group at my local 4th of July 5K and a 5th place finish at a notoriously early (start at 5:05am), hot (was 98 at 4:30am), and hilly (out and back course, so NO breaks) local 5-miler.

The 5th place finish was actually the sweeter result for me – as I just wasn’t feeling “it” that day and was pretty sure about 3,000 people finished ahead of me.  It didn’t result in an actual award, but 5 out of 32 did make me feel better (especially since it was my last race in my 40 – 44 box).

On to my first race in my new 45 – 49 box…

Pre-race Swag

Pre-race Swag

The Red Beard Rally take places in the Sonoita Arizona Wine Country and offers both a 5K and 10K distance.  The race honors local track coach and Arizona Wine Pioneer Al Buhl, who passed away from cancer several years ago.

Packet pick-up was available race morning at the local community center and included a technical race shirt and tote bag – with separate spacers for up to 6 wine bottles – we were in Arizona wine country after all….

Post-race swag was the race logo wine glass. The race logo water bottle and medal were given to the Age Group winners.

Post-race swag was the race logo wine glass. The race logo water bottle and medal were given to the Age Group winners.

Both the 5K and 10K courses included include paved roads, vineyard trails, rolling hills, and all the heat and humidity southern Arizona could throw at you at the start of monsoon season.

I had been warned by my running friend that you do the 5K at this particular race for two very specific reasons: the race starts relatively late and it’s WAY too hot this time of year to run a 10K in full sun and, [most importantly] if you run the 5K, you get a head start on all the 10K people at the post-race wine tasting.

You had me at first to the wine tasting…

We all had really good runs (everyone I came with placed in their Age Groups!) and we eagerly picked up our “finishers medals” – which were actually run logo etched wine glasses and allowed you to actively participate in the wine tasting hosted by several local wineries following the race!  Post race fun also included a live band, the awards ceremony, and lots and lots of raffle prizes.

We're ALL winners here!

We’re ALL winners here!

It was awesome to start out my new Age Group with a win AND get the chance to spend a fun afternoon hanging and drinking wine with my running friends – all while supporting the memory of someone who gave so much to the local area.

The stats:

  • 1st of 10 in my Age Group [45 – 49]
    • 9:32 pace
  • 45/146 Overall
    • 13th Overall Female
  • One VERY happy 45 year old ego…

Thanks for following along –

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Liquid Run

Race Report: California Kiley’s Summer 2017 Fun Run Series – The Liquid Run

19668026_10155471518873252_916497033_n

Hi everyone California Kiley here with another Summer Fun Run. As summer is now in full swing in a lot of area road racing kind of shuts down during the hotter weather months but I was invited out to a race that is all about summer running. Held in Newport Beach California The Liquid Run is a race like no other race out there. This is a floating obstacle race that measures 1/4 mile. I expected it to be small and pretty easy being only a 1/4 of a mile. Having run so many full marathons this year I felt I could take on the Liquid Run with no problems but I will tell you this was a great workout and I was sore the next day!! The best part it was a blast I think this was my favorite fun run to date!

19578140_10155471518868252_1641603966_n

Here’s the details on the race:

  • It run 9-5 so if getting up early sounds awful not a problem you can run it late. Or make it a all day event your choice if you upgrade your registration to VIP you can run the course as many times as you like. If you want to make it an all day beach day it’s the best day to do it as people are running the course all day and it’s actually really fun to watch!
  • I give this a great “Mommy and Me” stamp as it’s a great race to have kids at. Every paid adult gets a kids free play wristband which is a really fun float area.
  • There is a competitive heat at 9am so if you want to run fast then 9am is your race. This is a great time to watch as a lot of the serious racers are really trying to kill the course next year I’m going to totally be there to at least witness it!
    The Liquid Run swag!

    The Liquid Run swag!

  • No running experience needed
  • Swag is awesome! Instead of a T-shirt you get a medal at the end, a pair of sunglasses, sunscreen, a string bag, and a waterproof phone carrying case which we used during the race!
  • Staff was amazing!! Literally the nicest most helpful group ever! Volunteers who I was informed are mostly all returns from the past year because of how much fun they had volunteering! That’s pretty cool in itself.

This race had really only had one small con and that is it can get bottlenecked if you have a struggling group in front of you. Really this isn’t the worst thing in the world as I’m not really in any great hurry since it’s not timed and really there isn’t a huge hurry but know it will most likely take you about 2 hours to run the whole course since you will wait to conquer some of the bigger obstacles.

Only reasons not to do this race:

  • If you are deathly afraid of the water the floating obstacles sit in deeper water but you are provided with a life vest you will still end up in the water at least in the start and the end. You don’t need to be Michael Phelps though to do this race so even if your swimming level is low you are good to go.
  • You are no fun at all and think spending a day at a beautiful California beach is a bad idea!

Talking with the race directors the main mission of the race is to have fun and realize that this isn’t about cut off times or age group awards it’s really about a good time. I can honestly say this race has found a way to really take summer running to the next level! As they try to expand to different areas and more races a year I hope to be back for more of their races because it was truly the most fun I’ve had. Thank you to Sarah for coming along and helping me with pictures, video and interviews! A huge thank you to The Liquid Run staff, volunteers and runners for having us out at your super cool event! The race director said it best “we just want everyone to have a happy day!” Well Run All the Races had the happiest day thank you again!

California Kiley
