2018 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend: Meet #TeamCigna – Chelby Elam #WDWHalf

As the ladies of RunAllTheRaces get ready for the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend presented by Cigna, we’re excited to share the inspirational stories of some of the members of #TeamCigna.

Screen Shot 2017-12-22 at 3.48.42 PMBorn three months premature, Chelby Elam of Philadelphia always dealt with asthma and a heart murmur. Since joining Students Run Philly Style, running has made her lungs stronger, and she hasn’t had an asthma attack in years.

“My dad loves to run, so I would go to races to support him and saw lots of kids wearing Students Run Philly Style t-shirts,” said Chelby. “It was cool watching them cross the finish line. I felt inspired to join even though I wasn’t a runner and never really enjoyed competing in track.”

Students Run Philly Style is an after-school mentor program that gets kids involved in long-distance running, teaching life lessons along the way. Philly schools have their own teams that train together three times each week, coached by a teacher, leader, or parent.

“My Dad became our Students Run coach,” said Chelby. “It’s been so much fun to spend time together running – even though sometimes he bugs me with the dad jokes he makes up to keep our spirits high on long runs.”

“Teamwork and encouragement are two of the biggest lessons I’ve learned,” said Chelby. “Everyone is so supportive – even teammates you don’t know that well. It’s so important to help your friends when they’re struggling.” Another important lesson “is to just enjoy the run, which is different than running track. We’re not competing against each other. We’re all there to have fun.”

As a result of Chelby’s hard work and commitment to her health, The Cigna Foundation, a long-time sponsor of Students Run Philly Style, is sending Chelby and her dad on an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World in January. As a symbol and extension of her health journey, she will participant in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on Saturday, January 6.

“The Cigna Foundation believes that achieving and maintaining personal health means that communities need trusted places they can turn to for information and services,” said Mary Engvall, Executive Director of the Cigna Foundation. “We support nonprofit organizations that offer better health opportunities wherever and however they’re needed in the communities where we live and serve.”

“Chelby really stands out in our program because she works so hard. Watching her and her dad running together is a testament to the work we do to help the kids in our community and represents what our partnership with the Cigna Foundation is all about,” Lauren Kobylarz, Program Director for Students Run Philly Style.

Chelby and her dad participated in the Philadelphia Half Marathon in November, and the Walt Disney World Half Marathon will be her first time running out of state. She’s excited to come back to Orlando, a place she hasn’t visited since she was little.

“It’ll be so nice to run in warmer weather, for sure, and to see the different scenery,” said Chelby, “This is really a stepping to my next goal: running the full Philly Marathon in 2018.”

Outside of running, Chelby is a dog walker and freelance photographer, and a member of the Journalism Club. She served as a media intern for the Democratic National Convention, when it came to Philadelphia, and the Washington Post, and continues to volunteer at Students Run Philly Style.

2018 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend: Meet #TeamCigna – Sasha MacDougall #WDWHalf

As the ladies of RunAllTheRaces get ready for the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend presented by Cigna, we’re excited to share the inspirational stories of some of the members of #TeamCigna.

Screen Shot 2017-12-22 at 4.16.52 PMSasha MacDougall has a magical goal: to visit every Disney park in the world. In October, her visit to Hong Kong Disneyland was made extra-special when her boyfriend proposed in Tomorrowland! She’s now eagerly anticipating running her first half-marathon at Disney World in January with her fiancé and friends there to cheer her on.

An avid rock climber, she only recently took up running after deciding to get more fit and needing an activity she could do anywhere. It didn’t go as smoothly as she expected. Sasha explains, “I started off with a ‘couch to 5k’ app, and couldn’t run for more than 15 seconds! It was so embarrassing – I guess I wasn’t as healthy as I thought.”

Working out at the gym with fellow climbers, she began to improve her endurance through a 12-week program. She credits Cigna‘s work-Screen Shot 2017-12-22 at 4.16.45 PMlife balance with having the time to devote to wellness. Over time, she worked on her form, breathing and taking shorter strides – and invested in better running shoes! In the lead up to Disney, Sasha is considering joining a running group as longer runs can get monotonous. She’s also more conscious of what she eats as that impacts her runs, but confesses, “I wish I could say I am eating better, but running excuses having half a pizza!”

As she built up to running 10 minutes at a time, she needed a new goal she felt passionate about to keep her motivated, so she entered the Cigna contest. She sported a long red Ariel wig in her video submission because The Little Mermaid is her inspiration. “I watched that movie every day as a kid and Ariel was my favorite princess, but the more I watch it as an adult, I see that she won’t accept things at face value. Ariel challenges herself, and the inspiration lies within her. Now I say to myself, I CAN run a half marathon!”

2018 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend: Meet #TeamCigna – Karina Hernandez #WDWHalf

As the ladies of RunAllTheRaces get ready for the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend presented by Cigna, we’re excited to share the inspirational stories of some of the members of #TeamCigna.

Screen Shot 2017-12-22 at 4.28.55 PMFor Karina Hernandez, joining Students Run LA (SRLA) was a family affair. “My two older siblings were part of the team, and my parents would bring me to all their races to cheer them on. I thought it was so cool to see all the runners cross the finish line at the LA Marathon.”

Starting in 7th grade, Karina tried out and won a spot on her school’s SRLA team- they practice four times a week, running from 3 to 8 miles each day, and participating in long distance races each month. The goal: SRLA members get to participate in the Skechers Performance LA Marathon each March, with the organization covering coaching, training, registration fees and uniforms. Karina has run the so-called “Stadium to the Sea” race five times, and is looking forward to running her 6th marathon at Disney World with big sister and SRLA alum Laura to cheer her on.

“It’s really cool to sit in Dodger’s Stadium with thousands of other racers, with all their nerves and excitement, and to realize- Whoa! I am about to run the LA Marathon!” said Karina. The thing she loves most about running is “the sense of accomplishment. Sometimes my legs feel like they’re going to fall off, but at the end of the run you really feel like you’ve accomplished something.”

As a result of Karina’s hard work and commitment to her health, The Cigna Foundation, a partner of Students Run LA, is sending Karina and her big sister on an all-expense paid trip to Walt Disney World in January. She’ll represent SRLA in the Walt Disney World Half Marathon on Saturday, January 6, running with Ced Edwards of the Cigna Foundation.

“Enhancing the well-being of people and the places where they live directly connects to Cigna’s mission, “said Mary Engvall, Executive Director of the Cigna Foundation. “We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their best health, but sometimes those opportunities are limited by factors outside a person’s control. The Cigna Foundation’s philanthropic giving focuses on creating health equity to help people achieve their best possible personal health and enjoy living their best lives.”

As a long distance runner for so many years, Karina has had her share of injuries. After one race she was rushed to the hospital to treat a painful nerve issue. Luckily, she was soon back on her feet, with tips on posture and special orthotics to run pain-free. After a knee injury in 10th grade, she was no longer able to run with her best friend and teammate Gabby. “I was afraid I would slow her down, but she’s such a strong solo racer I’ve seen such an improvement in her running.” Karina credits Coach Mendoza with leading such a great Students Run LA team, one of the largest in the city.

“The Cigna Foundation’s support of Students Run LA enables terrific kids like Karina to experience the joys, character-building and health benefits of running. We’re pleased to partner with Cigna as we work to fulfill our mission for the at-risk kids of Los Angeles,” explained Coach Joe Mendoza, Students Run LA.

Besides running, Karina is an accomplished student who maintains a 3.0 average in her college-level classes. This award-winning baker competes in culinary competitions as training for her future career in hotel hospitality.

Countdown to runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 2018: Healthy Recipes from Cigna

One of the reasons the ladies from Run All The Races run all the races is that we like to eat – like REALLY like to eat.  And you can bet that we will be indulging a bit following our 5th Dopey Challenge [5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon races over one long weekend] – but it’s important to make better choices day-to-day [and especially the days leading up to a big race weekend].

Together with our friends from Cigna, we offer these tips and a bunch of yummy recipes you can try to get yourself race (and life) ready.

Just like a car cannot go the full distance with only half a tank of gas, the same concept is also true for our bodies. Here are some ways to help you properly fuel your body:

  • Don’t Skip Meals: When feeling starved, you are more likely to over eat at the next meal and choose fast foods and snacks. Head off temptation and eat regularly.
  • Eat Balanced Meals: Eat for nutrients and health, not necessarily for taste. Meals should include a balance of protein, carbs, and healthy fats.
  • Drink Plenty of Water: We have all heard this but sometimes don’t do it. A good rule of thumb is to drink 16 ounces of water two hours before your workout. For workouts over one hour, try to drink 4-6 ounces every 15 minutes. Once you’re done, continue hydrating to quench your thirst.

Avocadoes are a great source of heart healthy fat to keep hunger at bay. They also are a great source of vitamin B6. B vitamins help the body convert food to energy which is particularly important for athletes as they train; their bodies need to access that energy easily.
