California Kiley as you can probably guess hails from sunny Southern California…
I’m so happy to have come on board here at Run all the Races and help share some of my story and some of California’s amazing races and events!
I’m what most would call a jock for sure. I played 3 sports growing up and into college. I played competitive softball where I spent most of my days as a pitcher something I now coach. I also swam and played waterpolo at the college level. I found a love for the water very early on and would most certainly was a swim “nerd.” My fitness story has a lot of ups and downs and plenty of struggles with weight and how I felt about the way I look. My running story started out from struggle and sadness. By January 2008 my normal world started crumbling down around me when my beloved aunt was diagnosed with a brain tumor and only given a bleak outcome. There are no words to describe what was happening to my family at this point besides sadness. I am an emotional eater and ate my feelings daily. Ending a 6 year relationship though is really what caused me to run.
As with many people running a marathon was a bucket list item but it was one of those “someday” goals. The whole reason I even signed up was years before we were sitting around watching the newscast of the LA marathon and I made the comment that I wanted to run the LA Marathon someday. Well the boyfriend laughed at me and when I asked what was so funny he said “oh you can’t do that.” When I asked why he said “3 reasons, 1. you don’t even know how long a marathon is (this was true at the time) 2. you don’t run (also true at the time) and 3. you aren’t that kind of girl that could train for that long. (I believed this was true at the time.) So when he told me he wasn’t in love with me and that I was boring I signed up for the Disneyland half marathon. Yeah, not the best reason but it got me out there.
That race wasn’t pretty, actually it was extremely painful!! Realizing I had never actually run in my “training” it was a very long 13 miles. Oh did I mention I never thought to look up the distance!! Yup true story I learned how long a half marathon was… on the course!! While this sounds so crazy to that someone wouldn’t know the distance of the race they are running you should know that this whole crazy popular running world was much smaller as well I wasn’t exposed to the marathon world besides that one news cast I seen about the LA Marathon. I’m writing this not to sound like an idiot but to let others know that even with no knowledge it’s something you can do if you want to just start slow and learn it before you jump into it! Bloggers became a huge help for me and it’s why I want to help others.
My other loves outside of running are vintage clothes and events, pin up, tiki, costumes and of course Pittsburg Steelers football! I’ve been described as extremely rounded! But I feel I just have so many sides and they all make me a better runner in some form! I love to run in some sort of costume and find races that I can build a costume around. Having taken up sewing nearly 4 years ago costuming has become really fun also a skill any vintage girl needs!
My stats today are kind of hard for even me to believe the girl that didn’t even know the distance of a half marathon has now run 100 half marathons, 12 full marathons and dozens and dozens of shorter distance fun runs. So no matter where you start it really does prove it’s not where you finish!
