As the ladies of RunAllTheRaces get ready for the 2018 Walt Disney World Marathon weekend presented by Cigna, we’re excited to share the inspirational stories of some of the members of #TeamCigna.

Screen Shot 2017-12-22 at 3.13.44 PMSydney Highfield has always loved running, even as a kindergartner. In third grade, her grandma got her involved in Girls on the Run– an after school program that brings together girls to run and build self-esteem, emphasizing competence, confidence, connection, character, caring, and contribution to their community.

Says Sydney, “I want to tell girls about my great experience with GOTR and how it makes me happy to be in the program. I’ve learned how to be a team and how to work together to reach a goal like finishing a race together. We cheer each other on and encourage each other.”

As a result of Sydney’s hard work, positivity and commitment to her health, The Cigna Foundation, a partner of Girls on the Run, has selected Sydney to represent GOTR at the Walt Disney World 10K on Friday, January 5.

Though she enjoys running with her parents around their neighborhood, when she comes to Disney World, she won’t be running with mom or dad because “They slow me down!” Sydney has completed several 5k races and is really excited to be running her very fist 10k at Disney World.

“Besides running, I love to sing- I like pretty much anything upbeat and happy, if it’s sad song I’ll do it but I won’t enjoy it as much.”

“Enhancing the well-being of people and the places where they live directly connects to Cigna’s mission, “said Mary Engvall, Executive Director of the Cigna Foundation. “We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their best health, but sometimes those opportunities are limited by factors outside a person’s control. The Cigna Foundation’s philanthropic giving focuses on creating health equity to help people achieve their best possible personal health and enjoy living their best lives.”

GOTR Executive Director Karen Allen said, “Girls on the Run is proud to partner with the Cigna Foundation as we both strive to provide girls with the tools to be joyful, healthy and confident.  What an amazing opportunity for Sydney to take what she has learned and demonstrate her confidence through competence on the race course!”
